What are the
Benefits of Sound?
Great question! Also known as sound healing, sound therapy is the use of sound, vibration, and rhythm to promote relaxation and thus aid the body in its innate and natural ability to heal itself. Think of sound therapy this way: a massage therapist touches and rubs the body's tissues, whereas a vibrational sound practitioner vibrates the tissues. It is based on the idea that all matter (including the human body) is vibrating at a specific frequency. Thus, it is believed that illness, both physical and psychological, vibrates at frequencies that are "off beat". A sound practitioner aims to rebalance the body's frequency, bringing it back into a state of harmonic vibration in order to restore its natural state of health. Sound is already used in medicine today, for example: ultrasound for pain relief and tissue healing; lithotripsy to break up kidney stones; and many scientific studies have even shown the use of sound waves to dissolve cancer cells. However, I won't be using any fancy equipment. Instead, I use instruments from around the world such as crystal singing bowls, tuning forks, and drums, among many others. A complete list of my instruments can be found near the bottom of this page. These types of instruments have been used for thousands of years by many ancient cultures for healing the mind, the body, and the spirit. Today's science is simply just now catching up to studying and proving what these ancient peoples intuitively knew: sound, vibration, and frequency have profound and positive effects on both the physical and energetic human body, the mind, and the spirit.
This is also a great question! In one of my first in-person yoga classes, the teacher played a Himalayan singing bowl at the end of the class while we were lying down in savasana. It was only a few minutes that the bowl was played as we relaxed on our backs, but my body was so quickly relaxed in a way that I had never experienced before. When I stood up, I felt a peace within my physical body that was not present before she played the singing bowl. It was a profound revelation within myself that I knew I would be exploring further. In fact, it was such a profound effect that I, on a whim, bought a set of seven crystal singing bowls within a week of this experience. The first time I played these seven bowls, right before bedtime, I slept through the entire night (hardly even moved!) for the first time in well over six years. I WAS HOOKED on sound. Since this enlightening night, I have been collecting instruments and reading every book I can get my hands on as to how vibration and sound affect the physical and energetic human body. This knowledge and practice has been personally indispensable to me in healing Lyme and trauma within myself. It is a beautiful dance, the body and sound. I now see the body (and creation as a whole) as a symphony, with each part having a vibration that integrates seamlessly with the frequencies of the others to produce the most beautifully-resonant sounding machine that dances to the rhythm of everyday life.

Although sound, vibration, and rhythm may be a great complimentary method to medical & psychological treatments, they are not intended to replace professional medical and/or psychological advice, diagnosis, or treatment. Always seek the advice of your physician or other qualified health care provider for guidance and approval before engaging in any sound therapy. Never delay or disregard professional medical advice.
